The Best Christmas Adverts of All Time

Christmas adverts have become a staple of the festive season. It’s now expected that all the popular retailers bring out an advert that’s bigger and better than the previous year, as well as bigger and better than everyone else’s! Many of us look forward to seeing what the likes of John Lewis will do each year and we all have our favourites, including me. Here’s my pick of the best Christmas adverts of all time.

Irn-Bru: The Snowman (2006)

I’ve never been prouder to be Scottish whilst watching this advert. I can’t believe it’s over ten years old now – I can still remember the first time I saw it and almost died laughing! Taking the traditional story of The Snowman and giving it a Scottish twist, this is the most iconic Irn-Bru advert there has ever been.

John Lewis: Monty the Penguin (2014)

John Lewis are masters of making you cry at Christmas time. I always well up when I watch this advert, not thanks to Tom Odell’s dulcet tones. The story of little Monty finding a partner is adorable, but it’s when they both turn back into soft toys at the end that gets me – look how scruffy Monty is from years of being loved!

Coca-Cola: Holidays are Coming (1995)

Say it with me, “Holidays are coming, holidays are coming!” It’s not Christmas until the Coca-Cola ad has been on, period. This is one of my oldest memories of Christmas – I was only four when it first came out! But, it’s been a staple of the season ever since and the Coca-Cola truck has become synonymous with this time of year.

Sainsbury’s: Mog’s Christmas Calamity (2015)

How cute is that damn cat? Sainsbury’s teamed up with HarperCollins and children’s author Judith Kerr to put together this festive story – you could even buy the illustrated book to help support Save the Children. They also took a page out of John Lewis’ book with merchandise, so you could get your very own Mog for Christmas. Santa must have lost mine…

John Lewis: The Bear & The Hare (2013)

Now, this one is a tearjerker. Without a doubt, Lily Allen’s cover of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” made this advert and it’s hard not to feel emotional when she sings. The story of the bear discovering Christmas for the very first time is totally heartwarming and the animation is pretty fantastic, too.

Until next time,
